Indeed, following the battle at Fittsburh, Hildeburh's grief was compounded because, not only had she lost a son, husband and father in one day, she had lost herself. She'd failed, in other words, in her social role of peace-keeper.
Maintaining and preserving peace wasn't just a role for women; it was their very identity. Another role for women was that of transition figure. Grendel's mother is a prime example of this: She avenges her son's death; she is in turn killed in the depths of a mere, foreshadowing Beowulf's descent into a sort of middle-earth to find and kill a dragon near the end of the tale.
The women in Beowulf further fulfilled their peace-weaving function by arranging marriages between potentially warring clans. As did Lady Capulet in Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet, and like Helen of Troy, women were not only the arrangers for politically astute couplings, they were also the chattel involved in those couplings. Thus they knew better than men the implications of a union destined for failure.
In Beowulf, women were assigned the power of prophesy. Hrothgar alludes to this when Wealtheow, the old king's 'bed-companion', having done her ritualistic distribution of mead, takes her seat at the exalted side of his throne. It's also possible that, in serving the mead, women controlled one of the only facets of their lives in that warlike society, the power over mens' sobriety and wits.
They also played power politics on occasion. Queen Wealtheow rewarded Beowulf handsomely on his return from slaying Grendel. But she placed an addendum on her praise, saying that Beowulf would do well to take care of her sons until one of them could attain the throne of the Danes. As females are often depicted, then, Wealtheow was caring for her offspring, anticipating their struggle to overcome the rugged and warlike machinations of men in that age.
In Beowulf, specifically, women are given something of a starring role in the explication of the ruling Germanic code of the time. The example is Grendel's mother. Nameless, she's depicted as a savage woman, an evil beast, just like her son Grendel. But in avenging her son's death, she demonstrates the code of honor better than any of the men. Where Grendel had slain countless men of Hrothgar's Heorot cohort, Grendel's mother killed only one, the counselor Aeschene. And her act of vengeance was all the more intriguing inside the code, since she had no access to the commonly understood 'weregild', or man price that rightly belonged to her after Grendel was slain. Instead, Beowulf sought her out, in her own 'mere' home, and killed her.
The only flaw in Grendel's mother's observance of the code was in fleeing Heorot for her life, instead of staying and battling the men there. The Germanic code demanded that women display both elements of humanity, the compassionate and the warlike. Thus, when she fled, she betrayed the militaristic side of the code that demanded she stand her ground.
But perhaps the biggest role of women in Beowulf was that of prophetess. Wealtheow seems to be prescient in her admonition to Beowulf in protecting her sons. She warns him of dire consequences should they come to harm, thus recognizing the dangers that lie in wait for all their kind, if their warlike attitude persists. Again, following Beowulf's demise, 'a Geatish woman', name unknown, appears--again, after the battle--to warn the Geats that, because Beowulf their lord lies slain, they have much to fear from former enemies.
Women play an important role in Beowulf. Despite their background presence, and a dearth of lines for them in the epic, their words and actions serve the overall purpose of the poem, its concentration on variation and opposition. They are there after the battles, interrupting the celebrations with sobering words; they strive to uphold the ancient warrior code, sometimes better than the men do; they do their duty, which is one of the salient features of that code. And they provide, in addition to offspring for the nobles, a mirror for them in which to check their own successes and failures.

A car that cranks over but doesn't start, in many cases will be due to a bad fuel pump, a broken timing belt, an inoperative cam sensor or crank sensor. The first step in diagnosing a no start is to scan for codes with a code reader or scan tool. Approximately 40% of the cars towed in that I worked on in the last 25 years, either had a bad fuel pump or the fuel gage read incorrectly and the car was just out of fuel. Yes, some people actually have their cars towed in when all they need is some gas! If the fuel gage indicates that there is fuel in the tank, most people will assume naturally that the car does have fuel. But if the fuel sending unit or gage is off slightly, the car's gas tank could actually be empty. One of the easiest ways to check for a fuel pump related problem is to spray a little starting fluid into the air intake while trying to start the car. If the car starts momentarily, then there's a good chance the fuel pump is not working or the car is out of gas. You can also listen for the fuel pump's humming sound when the key is first turned on. Also if a inoperative fuel pump is suspected, a good technician will always check to verify there is power and ground being supplied to the pump, to eliminate the possibility of a bad relay or electrical issue. Fuel pressure can be checked with a pressure gage and if there is pressure, pulse can be checked at the fuel injectors in several ways including the most common, with the use of noid lights. If the injectors don't have pulse the engine won't start.

Broken timing belts also caused about 40% of the tow ins in my experience. A broken timing belt can fail causing the car to seem as if it ran out of fuel while driving. When trying to start the car though, the engine typically spins over faster than normal due to the engine having low compression from the timing being off and the valves being open at the wrong time. If the timing belt breaks, there sometimes could be a code set in the vehicles ECU (Electronic Control Unit) for no signal from the cam sensor. If this code is present, you can sometimes check to see if the cam is moving by removing the oil cap while someone engages the starter. Also the upper timing cover can be removed to allow access to the timing belt for inspection. Most of the time when a timing belt breaks the teeth (or cogs) are stripped down at the crank pulley the bottom sprocket preventing the belt from turning the camshaft.

Lack of pulse from the fuel injectors as stated before can prevent a car from running. This brings me to the third most common cause of a car that cranks over but doesn't start, approximately 20% of the tow ins that I worked on had the following problem. Many times the cause of lack of pulse is because of a bad cam or crank sensor. If the computer doesn't see either the crank or the cam turning, the fuel injectors won't be commanded to pulse. One quick indication that a cam or crank sensor may be bad is to check for RPM movement on the tachometer (if equipped) when trying to start the engine. If you have a scan tool not just a code reader, the cam and crank sensor data can be checked on many vehicles by accessing the appropriate screen. If no revolutions are shown when attempting to start the car, the respective sensor could be bad.
Obviously there are many vehicle makes, with different ignition and fuel delivery systems that may require a service manual to properly diagnose or to delve deeper. But with the above tips and tricks that I've used over the years you'll be checking the most likely causes, that hopefully will send you in the right direction.

If you are going to be using the RS-232 or the IBM 46XX interfaces there is a very simple step you must follow to program the Scanner. In the LS2208 Quick Start Guide, under STEP 3 you will have to scan the appropriate barcode for either an OPOS/JPOS or a Standard RS-232 interface. Simply by pointing the scanner at the appropriate barcode and scanning it, you will be programming the scanner to use that interface. When you, your staff or your billing service verify Chiropractic Insurance benefits, be sure to specifically ask for Physical Therapy benefits. Ask if Physical Therapy can be performed by a Chiropractor. If so, then ask if there is a separate deducible. Normally there is not, but you want to be sure. If you are contracted with the insurance carrier, ask what PT codes are covered. List the ones you are likely to perform in your office. If you are not contracted with the insurance carrier and do not know what specific codes are covered, bill out the PT codes you perform and see if they are covered.

97010: Hot/cold packs (of late, BCBS and UHC does not pay for this procedure, but some ins companies do). Billed as one unit, not timed.
97110: One-on-one. Exercises to develop strength and endurance, range of motion and flexibility, one or more areas. Therapeutic exercise incorporates one parameter (strength, endurance, range of motion or flexibility) to one or more areas of the body. Examples include treadmill (for endurance), isokenetic exercise (for range of motion), each unit is 15 minutes. You can bill up to 3 units. Depending upon your location, you can charge up to .00 per unit. Basically, 97110 is any exercise your patient performs while he is in your office. These include and are not limited to assisted stretching, exercises on the ball, hip roll, seated roll, etc.
97112: One-on-one. Neuromuscular re-education of movement, balance, coordination, kinesthetic sense, posture, and/or proprioception for sitting and/or standing activities, one or more areas. This code is intended to identify neuromuscular re-education, designed to re-educate the muscle for some function it was previously able to do (not intended to identify massage to increase circulation, etc). This will usually be in the form of some commonly performed task for that body part. 15 minute units. (Examples: feldenkreis, bobath, bap's boards, desensitization techniques...) Sometimes you will be asked for notes proving medical necessity if you use this code., so be sure it is medically necessary!
97140: One-on-one. Manual therapy techniques - myofacial release, mobilization/manipulation, manual lymphatic drainage, manual traction, trigger point - one or more regions, 15 minute units, charges can be up to .00 per unit, and a good average is from 1 to 3 units.
97140 is used to describe therapy which increases active pain-free range of motion, increased extensibility of myofascial tissue and facilitates return to functional activities. This code is reported in units of 15 minutes. It would include neuromuscular therapy, positional release, stretching and nearly any therapeutic technique performed manually for the purposes mentioned above. This therapy is to be performed on an area separate and apart from the area of main complaint in order to successfully bill to insurance. Append the 59 modifier to this code.
97124: One-on-one Massage, including effleurage, petrissage and/or stroking, compression, percussion, one or more areas, each 15 minutes
The main difference between 97124 and 97140 is the intention of the therapy.
If the therapist is performing therapeutic massage in order to increase circulation and promote tissue relaxation to the muscles, then use code 97124. If treatment is based on or consists of a basic relaxation massage, this is the code to use. If, however, your intention is to increase pain-free range of motion and facilitate a return to functional activities, use the code 97140. And don't forget the modifier!
97535: Activities of daily living - self-care, home management training - direct one-on-one contact with the provider, 15 minute units. This can consist of giving the patient exercises that he/she can perform at home. You can demonstrate the exercises and give them a print out with diagrams and directions on it. Some insurance companies pay, some don't. One small insurance company I know of allows 25.00 for 1 unit. Depending upon location, a DC can bill up to .00 per unit, and not normally over 1 unit. Perform this service and bill this code only once every 8 weeks or so.
A WORD ABOUT DOCUMENTATION
DCs are on the hot seat these days with insurance carriers because of their lack of proper documentation. If you don't write it down, you didn't perform the therapy! Record the type of exercises performed, and if the code is a timed unit, record the start and end times of your therapy.

The "OBD" of OBDII - sometimes written OBD-II or just plain OBD2 - stands for On-Board Diagnostics. The "II" is the next generation of emissions standards and codes for all vehicles sold in the U.S. from 1996 to the present, domestic and imports.

The OBD2 system is primarily for emissions control. Its basic components are the catalytic converter and strategically-placed oxygen sensors. These as well as everything in the vehicle having to do with engine performance and emissions control are continuously monitored by the vehicle's on-board computer system.

The "check engine" or "service engine soon" light is the signal that there is a problem with the vehicle's emissions. The computer has assigned a trouble code to the problem and turned on the trouble light - technically called the Malfunction Indicator Lamp (MIL).
When you retrieve the information from the computer via an OBDII diagnostic scanner, it doesn't tell you the problem directly, such as "timing too slow" or "misfire in cylinder number four". What you get is a five-digit alpha-numeric code such as "P0304".
The first digit is a letter corresponding to the main system causing the trouble code:
B = Body
C = Chassis
P = Powertrain
U = Network
The next four digits are all numbers. There is never a letter "O" in the OBDII diagnostic code. It is the numeric digit zero ("0").
The second digit corresponds to the type of code, whether it is the generic standard applying to all OBDII-compliant vehicles, or a manufacturer-specific code.
0 = Generic codes
1 = Manufacturer-specific codes
2 = Includes both generic and manufacturer-specific codes
3 = Includes both generic and manufacturer-specific codes
The third number corresponds to the sub-system where the problem lies.
1 = Fuel and Air Metering
2 = Fuel and Air Metering (injector circuit malfunction only)
3 = Ignition System or Misfire
4 = Auxiliary Emission Control System
5 = Vehicle Speed Control and Idle Control System
6 = Computer Output Circuits
7 = Transmission
8 = Transmission
So our example trouble code P0304 indicates a problem in the powertrain. It is a generic code for trouble with the ignition system or a misfire.
The fourth and fifth numbers of the code correspond to the section of the system causing the trouble. The list of all these sections is long, but you can see how the final "04" in our example points to a misfire in cylinder number four.
Most OBDII diagnostic scanners will come with a code library of specific code meanings. A list may also be found on-line by Googling "obd2 codes list".
You will sometimes find a reference to "Bank 1" or "Bank 2" in the code explanation. These banks are generally meant for "V-type" engines. Bank 1 refers to the side of the engine with the number 1 cylinder (odd-numbered cylinders). Bank 2 refers to the side of the engine with the number 2 cylinder (even-numbered cylinders).
A misfire is a "one-trip" or "type A" problem that by itself will not turn on the MIL unless it is severe enough to damage the catalytic converter. A severe misfire will not only turn on the MIL but will signal it to flash at one-second intervals.
Other problems are usually "two-trip" or "type B" problems. When the computer first detects a two-trip problem, it stores the trouble code as "pending". If on the next driving trip the problem has passed, the pending code is erased. But if the problem is still there on consecutive trips, the computer will turn on the MIL, alerting the driver to a problem.
The MIL can be persistent. Once on, it will stay on until the problem is resolved for three driving trips. However, though the light may go out, the codes remain in the computer memory for 40-80 trips depending on the problem.
Trouble codes remaining in the computer memory will cause a failed emissions inspection whether the "check engine" light is on or not.
Of course, your diagnostic scanner can turn off the MIL and erase the codes from the computer's memory. This will not do much good, however, if the problem recurs after two driving trips and regenerates the trouble codes. The information from the scanner should be used to locate and fix the problem, not just turn off the MIL and erase the codes.
