AL309 OBD-II Code Reader

 AL309 OBD-II Code Reader

Since this warning is buried in instructions, I'll lead with it: only connect it to your car when the ignition is off. I have no tale of woe around this, but the manual heavily emphasizes it after inexplicably putting this warning WAAAY down in the instructions (as well as near the end of page 2's disclaimers to the effect that hot objects can cause burns).

Finding the connector was immediate on one of my cars and took some Googling on my Toyota Tundra. Neither the manual nor the web site has a search function for this. You'd think it'd be obvious, since it has to be within a couple feet of the steering column, but it may not be.

On one car, the unit said it couldn't connect properly when I turned the ignition on then waited for something to happen. After disconnecting/reconnecting a couple times, I tried cranking the engine and suddenly all was well. On the other, just turning on the ignition started the analysis.

Since no codes were found - or anything else of note other than the basic info the unit is designed to supply - I have no feedback about resetting codes or using them to solve some automotive mystery.

The unit comes with a USB cable, about which the manual says little. Plug the AL309 into your computer, and you're likely to find that the 309's readout says something to the effect of not being able to link up. If you go to the Autel web site, to the 309 page and with the 309 still connected, you'll see a green-highlighted message that, yes, the 309's connected (if the 309's not connected, a red-highlighted message confirms that), then a couple boxes asking you to select which file to install from your documents directory.

OBD-II Code Reader / Scan Tool

OBD-II Code Reader / Scan Tool

The scanner is easy to use. Ordered this item yesterday and received it today...one day shipping. My 2001 Jeep Cherokee check engine light came on three days ago. I connected this scanner, followed the instructions and it found one error code. I selected "Read Codes" from the drop-down menu and it read as a slow emission leak. Went to a local store, bought a new gas tank cap and, so far, the light has not come on. The scanner can read On-Board Diagnostics II or OBD II for short.

Read this information before you purchase this scanner to make sure it'll work with your vehicle...this info is straight from the scanner's manual. According to the included manual, the EPA required "all 1996 vehicles and newer cars sold in the United States must be OBD II compliant..." Also, "a small number of 1994 and 1995 model year gasoline vehicles are OBD II compliant. To verify if a 1994 and 1995 car is OBD II compliant, check the Vehicle Emission Control Information (VECI) Label which is located under the hood or by the radiator of most vehicles. If the vehicle is OBD II compliant, the label will designate "OBD II Certified."

Wirless OBD2

Wirless OBD2

Wirless OBD2

Worked fine for me in just 5 min- just slightly flaky on initially connecting - but Iphone instructions weren't completely clear so here's the step by step that I did:

1) Plug it in to ODB2 port under your dash and set the car key to the ON position (don't have to start the engine) to read more data (wifi should work even off though)
2) Find the ELM wireless network on your iphone (settings - wifi) - mine said "CLKDevices" click connect
3) In iphone wifi settings change from DHCP to static
IP 192.168.0.5 (any ip other than .10 should work)
Subnet 255.255.255.0
Router 192.168.0.10 (you can probably leave this blank actually)

4) Get an app - I didn't research much and mainly just want this as a code reader and used Engine Link - (Torque Pro, Rev2 and many others should work too)
5) In your app connect to "192.168.0.10" and "port 35000"
6) Mine sort of connected (got a green light in app) but didn't get live data - I disconnected the wifi, turned the key to off and back on (and maybe replugged the ELM back into OBD2 port?) and it started working, stayed connected and I could pull CELs (trouble codes) and fuel/ live rpm when I started car etc etc.

Wifi Range is short - make sure your iphone is not reverting back to 4G or your home's wifi autojoin network if you are having problems.

Make sure to get the ELM327 Wifi version if you don't want to have to jailbreak your Iphone for Bluetooth (Android phones shouldn't have to)

I bought this to communicate with my 99 Honda Civic and it did just that. It can read and erase the check engine light and monitor live data. In Canada the absolute cheapest you can scan your car for is 60$ so for me this tool has paid for itself. Overall great product would definetly recomend for home mechanic.

I had a check engine light on my Toyota Camry 2001. I did a little research and found out that a computer scanner called an OBD II can be used as a diagnostic tool for most cars on the road today (1996 and newer with some exceptions). I decided to buy this affordable scanner rather than pay a mechanic $70 to $100 (plus sales tax, shop fees, and all their other nickle and dime fees) to read the code. When I got the Autel MaxiScan delivered, I read the instructions a couple of times. Then, I went out to the car and looked for the place to plug it in, which was right under the steering wheel. I plugged it in, turned the ignition key half way, pressed a few buttons on the scanner, and presto! It read P0401, which means egr flow insufficient. As it turns out, that is a common problem with 2001 Toyota Camrys. I cleared the engine light with the scanner, and unfortunately the engine light came back about 125 miles later. The P0401 code also came back.
